Back Back 2CV Restoration - Technical tips - Front grill muff and driving at high or low temperatures

Front grill muff and driving at high or low temperatures

Citroën delivered the 2CV with a front grill muff. It should be used when the temperature drops below 10º C (50º F). But if the temperature climbs above 15º C (59º F), it is very important to remove the front grill cover again.
If you do a longer trip at full speed at higher temperatures with the grill cover on you may overheat the motor.

If you start when it is cold you have to make sure not to put a high load on the motor before it reaches an oil temperature of about 80º C (176º F). Don't go at full speed.
At very low temperatures i.e. below -20º C (-4ºF) let the motor idle for some minutes. Before you start have a short look under the car if oil is leaking. The reason is the oil filter. At extremly low temperatures the oil will be almost frozen. However, the oil pump will press it with such an extreme pressure into the filter that it can blow the filter open. If you drive away without knowing this - you won't get far. So better check.
